The surat shabad or surat shabda yoga is a truly spiritual practice followed in the premises of Sant Mat situated in Dayal Bagh, in the outskirts of Agra City. The term Surat, in particular means the inner soul and shabda or shabad means, words of wisdom. Yoga is a practice to connect with the supreme force that is not in the reach of a common man. The guiding force of humanity, the ultimate power can be perceived and seen only through this holy practice.
They preach, anything that causes a break in meditation must be avoided. Unnecessary talk must be kept at bay. One should not waste his energy in indulging in unwanted activities which are a hindrance in our path of salvation and realisation of the supreme power. The realisation is possible through meditation and devotion to bhajan simran as taught by the Saint. One should repeat the holy name of the Supreme Being and also follow a path of self realisation and try recognising the soul within, which is known as Surat. The whole practise of this self realisation is in itself, Surat Yoga.
Yoga is a practise which enables the surat or soul within an individual, capable of traversing the regions beyond physical body, namely spiritual regions to ascend there with the means of a life current or an internal sound called shabad. This shabad is synonymous to nad, holy words, naam, bani, audible life stream among others. The meditation practice which enables the union of the soul and music of the various spiritual spheres gives it a name called Surat shabad yoga.
However one must not forget to follow the rules which the saints advise to follow which include, to abstain from eating fowl and flesh, leading a moral life and to stay away from the influence of drugs and alcohol. Following these rules will help us understand the dormant potential within us.
The words in the shabad are having a competent power to guide the soul to the subtle spiritual planes to the highest plane. These words carry a transcendent power and are believed to be the sustaining force of this universe and are also known as music of spheres. These words have the unique power to help the journey of soul back to the creator itself, closing the apertures of pleasures of this life and concentrate on the divine sound current which resonates within us from birth till death.
